TEAM EVALUATION

Analysis of the team experience:

The knowledge that we gathered during this cession gave us the opportunity to practice and discover new ways of working in teams. The work started at the end of the semester so we already knew the members in our team. However, we discovered that every one in the team could develop new skills and roles.

For each task we were ask to work on, we realized that we couldn't do it separately. For instance, when we were working on "playing extract from a play" it would have been impossible to do the representation without rewriting together the script, rehearse the play with all the team members and finally to present our work to the public.

We have taken advantage of each member's strengths : Louis is more a leader, perfectionist and a hard worker, Timothy is very creative and listener, Eva is motivated, leading and has computer's skills, Aurelien is a finisher and a rational type and Wei gives us the opportunity to understand another's culture way of working in team.

The fact that we were 5 members in our team forced us to do compromises: we often had different ideas, personality and it was hard at the beginning to settle on the right one. But with good communication, we learned that it was easier to avoid conflicts and resolve problems.

Most of the time, we were good listeners and we took time to take into account every point of view and to create a solidarity within the group.

The experience was interesting and positive because we had a goal every week. We think our main improvement was on our ability to organise: after each presentation we fixed in advance every meeting and tried to be very efficient during the meetings giving the time imparted. We knew we had to do our work in time because we couldn’t make the others late.

We learned that mutual trust is a key to success in a team. We think that the work we have done gives us tools for our professional life after we graduate.

We also think that our presentation skills improved: the seminar was a hard work but 45 minutes gives us the time to animate the class and to deliver a message.

.
To conclude, we are happy of the work done and of what we learned by working in a group: we gave each other advices and supported everyone's work as we could.
We would be glad to work together again in the future now that we know everyone's skills and weaknesses.

WEI WEI - 2nd Self Evaluation

During all the work we have do for English this session I had different jobs in the team and I used different positions.

For the seminar I was ask to do research with Aurélien to try to find the more information we could to make the presentation and put on the powerpoint. We also had to resume the information to only keep interesting and important points.

On the movie, I am the one who is not stressed and the less afraid so I take the role of an animal that is very funny and always saying funny sentences. It was hard to learn all the text but the repetition we made before the presentation in class made me remind the text quickly.

For the last part of the class, we had a game to make. I had the idea for some movies we used for the miming game and I worked on the powerpoint. It was the easy one of the three and I was the one that was the less long.

So I think I can say that I am glad of how we work together with the team. We have no problems and we are efficient.

AURELIEN - 2nd Self Evaluation

In fact, I was more nominated as a follower in the team because I was not the leader of the team but I was completely involved in the team unity and effectiveness.

I was assigned more to do the research on the Internet and we met four times during the week to collect information and prepare ourselves for each presentation.

We were the first to do our seminar that is why we had to immediately start working on our first presentation to the class.
So we all read independently the chapter from the book on creating teams and then we met to give our impressions on the content and theories of the book advised.

For our second teamwork we had to work on a role play of our choice. So everyone tried to find a good and funny part of a movie. That is why we chose a Disney movie and we all approved to play an extract of “Over the hedge” an.
It was really funny to try to make this project funny and realistic but also very exigent. In fact take just one scene was not really easy and interesting so we decided together to take some scenes from this cartoon and rewrite the scenario to create kind of a preview of the film. We also tried to at the attribute the different roles according to our personalities.

Everyone in the team found their role and we did everything we could to make the team work.

I would say that my position in the team corresponded well to my personality. I was in the good place in the team work because I prefer working alone so I was a good researcher very efficient to make the projects grow.
For the role play I had a very funny character to play that I really enjoyed.

To conclude everyone in the team was participating we all gave our opinion and ideas, that simply help to improve our teamwork very rapidly.

TIMOTHEE - 2nd Self Evaluation

The seminar consisted in explaining the “How to build a Team”. Even if it was a theoretical presentation we brainstormed to make it more attractive. I tried to use my sense of creativity but also my will to raise a well-structured seminar so that we managed to catch the audience attention.

The second task was the “extract of the play”. We had to choose the extract related to “building teams”, then work together to do an original and creative work. For our team our mission didn’t consist in learning dialogues but more in acting to be as close as possible of the atmosphere of the movie. I still tried to put my creativity in the project.

The last task consisted in creating a scavenger hunt. We wanted to use images and sounds to better catch the audience attention. However we didn’t expect the teams to find the answers so quickly.

All those tasks gave me the opportunity to work regularly in a team with members that I appreciate. I felt how important organization is when working in a team with different personalities.

EVA - 2nd Self Evaluation

Initially, I was not designated as the team leader but I wanted for my team a real cohesion and efficiency. As we were the first to do our seminar we had to start working immediately on our teamwork.

I was assigned to do the power point and we met four times during the week to gather information and see how we could organize the presentation.

We all read separately the chapter from the book on creating teams and we first met to give our impressions on the information we gathered.

Then we worked on the play and we all agreed to play an extract of “Over the hedge” an American cartoon. It was very nice to work on this project but also very challenging: we had to take several scenes from the movie and rewrite some of the scenes. We tried to divide the roles according to our personalities. I organized the rehearsals at my place and suggested the direction.

My place in the team corresponds to my personality : I am very motivated to make the projects work and I always try to give ideas and to give everyone a role they enjoy.

I think that everyone in the team found their role and we did everything we could to make the team work.

Every member gave ideas allowing us to improve our teamwork. As far as I am concerned, the teamwork and my roles in this team permitted me to enable my personality and my creativity.

LOUIS - 2nd Self Evaluation

As I naturally appear as a team leader when working in groups and as the time we had between the acknowledgment of the work to be done and the presentation date of the seminar was very short, I took a role closer to a team leader on the organization of the seminar, more than during the accomplishment of the other activities.

In fact, during the organizing of the seminar, the work was led by Eva and myself as we have good organisational skills and are hard workers. We were able to quickly narrow the information we needed to put together the seminar.

We had already worked together as a team with these same people so it was quit easy for me to lead this project as I knew who would be able to do what, and I was aware of the strength and weaknesses of each one of my team members.

Then, on the second assignment we had to do, I left the team leading to become a “normal” team member. In fact, as we asked to play an extract, the leading was left to a more artistic person: Timothée. I was the one who came up with the movie, and thanks to my English skills, I was in charge of rewriting the script so that it was easier to understand the play without seeing the movie.

Finally, on the last activity, as Aurelien is the one that came up with the idea for the scavenger hunt, he was the one who lead the project. I was myself helping Eva on the PowerPoint and brainstorming in order to find ideas for the movies and songs we could use for the game.

So it seams to me that during the team work, I usually had the role I always endorse depending on the kind of work that is asked for. But even though I very often am the team leader, I gave up that role when someone from the team had more appropriate skills to lead depending on the work to be done.

TASK EVALUATION - Hunt

SCAVENGER HUNT

The last task we were asked to conduct was a scavenger hunt.
It was actually the easiest to do because we had already been thinking of what to do during and the past weeks of the third session, so even before the first meeting for the scavenger hunt we already knew the subject we were going to do it on and how we were going to organise it.

In fact, this is the activity that only took us two meetings. So we gathered together to discuss on how to organize the different stages of the scavenger hunt, how we were going to give out the points. Once the rules were settled we chose what questions we were going to ask to the teams and on what subject.

So the final decision was to start by a miming contest divided in three rounds, we had to brainstorm to try and find movies that had a specific point or caracter that could be acted out so that the team mates could easily find the movie we were looking for.

Then we started looking for the songs we were going to use to make them guess. The hard part was that we had to modify the rules applied to this part because we had to find a system so that everyone in the class would not go on and just scream out movie tittle.

The last part, meaning the actor to find was the hardest to organise because we were trying to find hints that could allow people to get closer and closer to the person we were looking for without letting them find it directly on the first hint.

Then some of the team members left and two of them kept working to finish the PowerPoint and print out the cards we were going to draw from the hat for the miming.

Our main fears for the presentation day concerned aspects of the treasure hunt we tried to evaluate (in duration) but that was completely out of our control, the rapidity of the teams to find the answers for the mimes and the music. Finally, it turned out to be the contrary of what we expected because the teams found the answers faster then we thought, so the time came out just fine.

TASK EVALUATION - Extract

EXTRACT FROM A PLAY

This task was for us one of the hardest to put together and this for many reasons.

Fisrt of all, we had a really hard time finding what movie we were going to take the extract from. But it was shure that we were going to take it from an animated movie.

During the first meeting for this task, we all gathered together to brainstorm to find what we were going to act. So finally we settled on the animated movie: “Over the hedge”.

The reason for this choice is that there is a whole storry around how to organise the team to accomplish a mission: steal the food. It is exactly what we were looking for because we not only wanted to experience “team spirit” during the work we were doing, we also wanted to act a movie talking about team work so this animated movie came perfectly like we wanted.

The next step was to find and watch the whole movie all together and find out which part of the movie we were going to select. This was a very hard part because each memeber wanted to act a different part of the movie, or play a different animal.

So it was hard but we finnally settle on 3 different scenes that also had to be understandable for the audience even though we were not expecting everyone to have seen the movie.

The third part came out as one of the hardest, while some of the team members were working on how to recreat the environment and choose the costumes using what we had and just bying a few elements. The other members were working on rewriting the script to make it easier to remember and understandable for the class.

Then everyone separated to learn its part and the last meeting was used to work and practice. See if everyting was organised and if nothing was left undone.

Finally during the act in the class, it is true some of us forgot a part of the text or a sentence but we improvised and helped each other out. We were all kind of afraid before starting because some of us are shy and were a little stressed by the idea of playing animals in front of the class. But after the class we all spoke and realized that once you have started you really get caught into it and forget the rest.

It was really a fun thing to do and left us with really nice souvenirs!

TASK EVALUATION - Seminar

SEMINAR : CREATING TEAMS

As we were the first group to present the seminar, the first task was to understand the work that the teacher was expecting us to provide. First of all, we met the day after the asignement of the task to talk about what we needed for the presentation. We agreed that on a group of 5 members, 2 will be assigned to read together the chapter of the book, and the others will provide all informations they could find using:

  • The infothèque
  • Libraries in Paris
  • Internet
  • Personal knowledge

During the second meeting we shared all the information we had gathered and settle together on what information we will need for our presentation. We agreed on the games we should make the audience practice, and we made a draft of the plan we should use.

The third meeting was the hardest one: we realized that we had too much information and that we needed to go further on certain points and leave some of them behind if we wanted the class to understaind the message we wanted to deliver.

The fourth meeting allowed us to finish our plan and we started to create the power point of the presentation: we wanted to have a good support of power point because the audience has to take notes and learn something from us.
We decided to use a Mac because of the quality of the support: it is also more professional to use this material.

We decided that we didn’t want to give a slide or two per person; we wanted everyone to talk on the subject and give opinions. So we all work on the entire presentation and we just decided that one of the team member will talk more and introduce a slide, then everyone should fell free to ad information from personal knowledge or from information he manage to gathered.

On the day of the presentation we had one fear: the time! We just could rehearse 2 times and one of the times was too short, the other too long! Finally, we were just on time during the presentation without avoiding any aspect of what we decided to give to the audience so it was a real satisfaction.

We spend a lot of time preparing for this presentation but we also learned from our mistakes and we are sure that we would be more efficient if we were to start over again. But we are happy with the result and the teacher seems happy two, and most important, we manage to deliver the right message to the audience.

SUMMARY - Communication

Definition of communication

Communication is defined as a process by which we convey meaning in an attempt to create shared understanding. It is through communication that collaboration and cooperation occur. Something that is communicated by or to or between people or groups. The exchange of thoughts, messages, or information through speech, signals, writing, or behavior. The art and technique of using words effectively to exchange information or ideas.

Why is communication important in a team?

• To transmit information, knowledge and emotion.
• Give your ideas and express your personality.
• To create a dialogue.
• To develop a network/relationship.
• To have an influence on others.
• To avoid conflict.

To get an efficient communication

Define a team structure

In order to reach a common goal and a synergy between members of a team it is fundamental to build a structure with roles.
Everyone has a role and an objective to reach for a common interest.

Common objective

3 Main questions to answer:

  • Which result to expect from work?
  • Which are the means available?
  • Is the team structured?

The main objective of team work is to be able to divide work and reach interdependence between members.

In order to reach common objective, a team leader must find in each member a source of mo

Comments:

We could say that the PowerPoint was really nice and well organized; too bad it had many mistakes on it. The team members each knew there part even if they some times did not exactly know when it was their turn to start talking, reveling that they might have separated a little more the work then the other teams but the global result was alright and the message came through pretty well (which is good when you conduct a seminar on communication).

The negative aspects of this presentation is mainly the way the members stood all regrouped next to the computer and having event the person in charge of the powerpoint sitting in front of the computer and not even standing up when it was his turn to talk. The activities were correct only the first one with the sentence going around the room was really long (more then 5 lines) making it impossible to memorize but it was relevant as it arrived totally changed from its original version.

SUMMARY - Problem Solving

To solve problems 5 steps must be followed:

1. Identify the problem and find out the visible manifestation, the consequences.

2. Focus on problem containments. It is a temporary action to treat the symptoms
=>avoid the problem to spread.

3. Research method => investigate and conduct data collection process. The data collection interview appears as essential to recognise problems and enable the team to have a brainstorming. This brainstorming should be a creative discussion and requires a leader. Thanks to efficient brainstorming, the team can find a solution to solve problems.

4. Analysing a problem => Collecting all relevant information and analysing maintenance problems. The team members must identify what is the ideal solution. Generally, the root cause is a controllable and solvable force. As a result, the team has to focus on the root cause.

Developing possible solutions is obvious when solving problems within the team. The team has to evaluate all the possible solutions.

5. Implement the chosen solution.

As a conclusion, solving problems means analysing problems before acting. The whole team is concerned by both the problems and the mean to solve them.

Comments:

Concerning the form of the presentation and the comments we could put forwards concerning the team, we could say that the topic was well treated. It was clear the whole team worked together on the seminar and did not just spread the work to the different members.

On the presentation day, the negative aspects we can critic are:

  • a little lack of dynamism, and be careful on the body language,
  • the way they stood during the presentation (all grouped on the side),
  • several English mistakes on the PowerPoint,
  • eye contact, the team members were almost always looking on the teachers side which made it hard for the people sitting on the other side of the classroom to understand
  • activities were a little bit long
  • a few problems on who should be talking for which slide

SUMMARY - Team Leading

What is a leader?

A leader is an individual within a group who wields the most influence over others. There is always a leader in a group because without a leader, the group does not exist.

What has a good leader to do?

- He has to appreciate the collective brilliance of a team.
- He believes in the power of diversity.
- He sees leadership as a role and not as a position.

Role of a good leader

Direction setters: they define the team’s purpose.

Boundary managers: connecting the team to the broader organization and hierarchy.

Commitment to people: members are primarily concerned about relationship and about being valued as a team member.

Coaches: in order to enable the team to achieve its aims and objectives the team leader also needs to ensure that the team has the right members with the right skills and the necessary resources to achieve its task.

Facilitators: to make things easier, everybody must know what he has to do.

Negotiators: finding and negotiating for needed resources.

Enthusiasm, Energy, Inspiration and Expertise:
team members want to be inspired and motivated by team leadership which has the energy and enthusiasm to fire them up.

Two theories of leadership

The Great Man Theory: People are born leaders, leaders are not like other people and they lead in all situations.

The Contingent Theory:
Relations with others, clarity of role definition and position of power.

What makes a leader effective?

Production-oriented (quantitative aspect): initiating structures, getting the job done, organizing work, setting goals and defining roles.

People-oriented (qualitative aspect):
establishing good relations with subordinates, explaining things to them and making sure they feel okay about their job.

Comments:

Now concerning our comments for this presentation, we mainly though that it came out a little short during the class so our team thinks that they might not have practiced enough before coming in class to present it because otherwise they would have realized it was a little short in time.

The games and activities used were really relevant even if the quiz was a little hard to conduct or to understand at the beginning but the analysis of the results were alright.

Concerning the Powerpoint and the body language on the presentation day. First of all, the slides were a little bit charged, meaning they had a lot of information on them making it hard to read and listen at the same time to the team members. Finally the team members were pretty calm during the presentation and concentrated, the only negative aspect comes from the way they used the space, in fact, they barely moved even when one of the members was a little hidden by his partners and it came his turn to talk.

My strengths and weaknesses:

My strength is that I have a strong sense of responsibility. I also have the ability to work hard and motivate people. Reliability is very important in a team, if you don’t have reliability we couldn’t do anything well. My principal weakness is the language because I am foreigners so I have a little problem in communication. But I will try my best to solve the problem.

My expectation:

I expect our team to achieve all the tasks and fulfil the goals settled.
I hope also that we can have a good relationship between the members and that the working atmosphere between us will be enjoyable during all the session.

Expectations from the team members:

My principal expectations from the team members are we they could enjoy the time when we work together and I can see their involvement in the group. I hope that each member will feel part of the team and communicate openly.

AURELIEN - First Self Evaluation

My Character traits:

I would say that I am a very open-minded because I am very curious so I always be interested in discovering new things and cultures. Therefore I really enjoy travelling and meeting new people from other origins and so my adaptability to new environment is not a problem for me. Moreover the pressure and the stress do not afraid me on the contrary it motivates my work and increase my implication.

My strengths and weaknesses:

Concerning my strength, I am very curious I always want to know what others think and so that emphasize my adaptability in different professional background. Furthermore, my competitiveness is really one of my strong points, I like competition and that motivates me to work harder. Last but not least, I am very ambitious that mean that when I start or do something I use all the means to reach my goal.
About my weaknesses, maybe I expected too much of the people I am working with and it can creates tensions. Finally, I am too insensitive when I work because personal satisfaction doesn’t care for me, only the results matter.

My expectation:

In this work group, I expected a lot of exchange, especially with the acting play which could put us in a very new situation of working together, and this could improve our sense of unity and organization in a team. Likewise, the seminar can give us knowledge on how the creation of a team is functioning and have to be effective.

In a team I can found a good atmosphere to work without pressure but effectively. However, beginning to work is hard sometimes; I need to be push by someone else to revealing my motivation. Therefore I will intend to work more autonomously when necessary.

My expectation:

I expect to be a good team member and to manage to work as effectively as I can. I also hope not to disappoint my colleagues. Moreover I expect to learn the key success to work by team better than before.

My strengths is my will do a well done work. I also have the ability to work hard and motivate people. Motivation is very important in a team: I am always present to give motivation to those who let go. Though, my principal weakness is my impatience and the fact that I’m a perfectionist. I’m going to try to improve this point during the cession.

My expectation:

I expect our team to achieve all the tasks and fulfil the goals settled. I hope also that those common objectives will reinforce the links and relationship between the members and that the working atmosphere between us will be enjoyable during all the college

Expectations from the team members:

My principal expectations from the team members are their honesty and their involvement in the group. I hope that each member will feel part of the team and communicate openly. Also, I would like to be able to rely on them if I need.

LOUIS - First Self Evaluation

My Character traits:

Concerning my personality I would have to say that even though I used to prefer working alone do to the fact that I am a little bit individualist and very perfectionist, all the teamwork we have done during these past three years at ESCE has allowed me to change. In fact, as the number of projects we had to conduct in teams would keep growing, I adapted myself and I have now reached a point at which I appreciate working in groups.
Thanks to my multiple cultures it seems to me that I am quite open minded, and people tend to say that I am mature for my age. I put a lot of application into the tasks I conduct and I appreciate when the work is well done.

My strengths and weaknesses:

It seems to me that my major strengths are my organizational skills, my technical knowledge and the capacity I have to lead and support my team mates thanks to my capacity to guide, bring ideas and manage. It is clear that my main weakness is my perfectionism, which results in losses of time for very futile details and how it can annoy other team members. I may also express a certain lack of patience especially when I feel another member does not seem concerned by the work or is not making efforts.

My expectations:

I am hoping we will be able to achieve all settled goals. I would really appreciate working in a serious but relaxed environment. As our team is composed of people we always work with, I know we should be able to reach our objectives. But we have integrated a Chinese student this time. Therefore, I would really like him to become a solid member of the team and benefit of his point of view and strengths.

Expectations from the team members:

I am not worried about their motivation or their implication into the activities we will be doing. Nevertheless, I am expecting them to contribute as they have always done, putting forwards their strengths and knowledge. On the relational aspect, I hope each member will feel well integrated and part of a “real efficient team”.

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to reach our objectives through collective work. We recognize that success in our mission is the result of team effort. CREATEAM’s aim is to develop an interactive way to transmit essential knowledge around team building. We also seek personal development through the multiple tasks we were to conduct or more specifically the two projects which were in our case: a scavenger hunt and acting an extract from a movie.

WELCOME TO OUR TEAM LOG !

First of all, our team is composed by five members.

Louis : louis.darrieus@esce.fr

Eva : eva.yung@esce.fr

Timothée : timothée.bosquet@esce.fr

Aurélien : aurelien.brajot-rimmerman@esce.fr

Wei : wei.wei@esce.fr

We have created this team in order to conduct the different tasks we were asked to do for the English (or more likely, the team work) course.

The reasons that justify the choice of the team members are simple. We have already worked together, which allows us to know that we are cooperative, able to work together efficiently and we can rely on each other.

On this blog, which stands as our team log, you will find all the information around the team, our organization, our self evaluations and even more!

We hope you will enjoy your visit and discover
all about our superb team! ;)
